Dang it! That’s all I can say right now. Is our 36 year old catcher going to be a big contract bust like Carl Pavano? Speaking of Pavano, that guy should be coming back around late August or early September. Should be at least a bit of help to our rotation (or bullpen). Back to the topic. Our catcher Jorge Posada was placed on the DL prior to the first game against the Twins.
Posada signed a multiyear contract to catch for the Yanks last offseason, but turned out to be a bust this season. The aging catcher missed 32 games because of a right rotator cuff injury, and though he returned, he still goes through shoulder pain now and then. His arm ain’t good either, failing to throw out many cunning base stealers who take advantage of this problem. The Yanks, who pity him, placed him on the DL to avoid further pain.
Dr. David Altchek advised season-ending surgery to help Posada end his pain. Posada will likely undergo surgery on his shoulder, but he could choose to do it after the season, which seems silly. The earlier you undergo operation, the earlier you return. With the fall of Jorge, Jose Molina takes up the starting catcher job, with Chad Moeller as the backup. With Molina’s fine defense and strong arm, he should be a good catcher, with the exception of power. Which means, Brian Cashman might take some time to look through the catching market.
