Yanks use vets’ skills to blank Rays

Coming off two tight wins over the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees rode the excellent pitching of veteran Andy Pettitte and the excellent batting of veteran (and longtime captain) Derek Jeter en route to a 5-0 shutout of the young Tampa Bay Rays, the surprising bosses of AL EAST.

Andy Pettitte fanned five batters and gave up four hits in 8.0 innings. The Rays’ all-star Scott Kazmir wasn’t bad either, fanning seven of the first ten batters en route to nine strikeouts. With this victory, the New York Yankees prevented themselves from falling 9.5 games behind the Rays for the division crown, and also gave Pettitte a 10-win season for 2008.

A highlight to the game: Derek Jeter robbed Willy Aybar of a RBI single by tracking down the grounder and using his signature “spin around and throw” to Robinson Cano at second, getting Dioner Navarro at second.

Like Rays outfielder Carl Crawford said, the Yankees can produce runs anytime they want. It’s just a matter of what time they produce runs.

  1. Yankees rock the whole wide world. Well Jeter made a GREAT PLAY! I envy it, man! Just kiddin’. Losing out on Sabathia was bad enough. The Yanks better sign Tex in the offseason.

  2. Seriously, Jeter was great defensive. If only hes good offensive.
